production 2 Interview.

Week 1:
  • Write a proposal and pitch your idea to your supervising teacher.
  • Research documentary styles you want to use - post your ideas to your blog - you might use short of the week or feature or TV documentary films you have seen.
  • Audit the resources you have access to. Who are you interviewing?  When and where are they available?  What locations and settings can you use (covid restrictions and safety)?  What technical kit will you need?  Will you need other props?
  • Write a script, shot list, and schedule (you may wish to make these in a free celtex account)
  • Risk assessment for your shoot (including Covid)
Week 2:
  • Further research, initial 'pre-interview' with the subject? (you need to know what type of thing they will say for you to plan your film, so having a chat first would of course be good)
  • Write up interview questions and shoot plan (noddies, cutaways, additional angles)
  • Sourcing archive or found footage
  • Research lighting and do test interview shots and establishing shots
  • technical run-through of the interview set up (place camera, check it works, framing, sound etc)
  • Sourcing music and other sound assets
  • Set up folders and file structures for the edit
  • Create graphics templates like lower thirds or rolling titles
Week 3
  • Conduct the main interview - see checklist
  • Shoot B reel footage
  • Shoot establishing shots
  • Record additional sound
Week 4
  • label and organise the footage and assets into folders
  • Import assets to premiere
  • Transcribe interview - You can use the app Transcribe or Otter
  • create and edit plan in line with script
  • Create a rough edit of the interview
  • Place B reel and other assets for rough cut
  • Get feedback and write up the final edit plan
Week 5

  • Pick up any additional shots or reshoots
  • Recut story for the final edit
  • Add final music mix and sound
  • Lockdown all clips for the final edit
  • Add graphics and titles
  • Final color grade
  • EXPORT and upload to youtube and blog

The interview I will be doing is an interview with my Dad. The interview will be about him making a record player. I will be asking questions such as; Why did you make a record player? How did you make the record player and what was the best thing about making the record player?

In my interview I will be interviewing my Dad. The 3/4 minute interview will be about why and how he made his record player. I have chosen this idea because I personally have a interest in records and audio equipment myself. The other reason I have chosen this idea is down to covid 19 making us stay inside. This means it is easy to interview a family member. The subject of this interview is my dad making the record player. The story will be his stories and memories of records.

The main questions.

How did you make the record player?

why did you make the record player?

How long did it take to build the record player?

The questions about the story involved.

What was your first LP/ 7 inch single? How old where you when you brought it/received it?

what is your favorite thing about records?

what is good about owning records?

Type of documentary styles.

https://youtu.be/T6TnlX63ZOM

The style of documentary I would like to use is the poetic documentary style. I would like to have a shot with my dad putting on a record. Then it will fade into my dad talking about his childhood and some stories he has about vinyl records.

The location of the interview will be in my house and it will be filmed in the living room and dinning room areas. This will be done to meet the guidelines of covid 19. We will have access to my phone or a camera for filming. The props I will need are. The camera, The record player and a record.

Risk assessment.

Due to covid 19, we have to interview a family member and we will have to do the interview in our own house. as a result there are barely any risks to assess. The transmission of covid is one risk however, it is a small risk as we all stay inside our house. The use of hand sanitizer and washing hands will help prevent transmissions of covid. One other risk is the lights could over heat. This can be prevented by multiple checks while filming.

Lighting an Interview.

In this video it was good at explaining how to light up the room.

In this video it was good at telling my how position the subject I am interviewing.

In this video it was good at explaining what shots to get and what/what not to do when positioning the subject.

Testing.

This test was not very good as the camera was wonky.

The last two tests had better lighting but I was positioned in front of the light source, this is of course the wrong thing to do.

These test where on my Nikon digital camera on a tripod. As I do not have a microphone I used the cameras built in microphone. However, the microphone that is used is not very good and you can hear static picked up from the camera.

For these tests I was testing getting the height right as well as testing the light. This why in my first test I was not in shot.

These tests where on my iPhone. I used a tripod that was on top of a few books as It was not tall enough. I had better lighting, better audio and after a few attempts the camera was in the right place to see the subjects face.

This is a testing shot/video to see what I can capture and to see how good the lighting is.

Script.

This is a basic timestamp script. I will try and follow the timestamps as much as I can. However what I will do is film more shots from the shots I need  and I may add a few more shots to the finished Interview.

This is an test shot to see what I can capture. I am testing the sound quality and I am Testing the lighting. From this test we now know the table creeks. To prevent this from happening in the interview I will try and get the subject not to lean on the table as much.

From this shot we can see that dust cover creates an reflection. This means when I do an birds eye shot I would have the dust cover lid up rather than closed.

The rough cut.

The feedback.

I could add music in the background.
Add a bit more b reel.
Sound quality could be a little higher.

In my final edit I would have the interview fading in from a fading out section  where you can hear a record playing. I will have b reel in sections of the interview to keep the video interesting and less boring to watch.

Final.

In the edit I took out the room sound by using de noise and de reverb. I hoped it would get rid of the sound of the table. However, what ever I tried nothing worked. This means next filming project I will make sure no sounds, such as the creaking of a table, will not be picked up in the video. I will also make sure those sounds will not be made during filming.

As I was using my phones microphone the quality of the audio is not the greatest. However, it was better than the digital cameras microphone. I have added a few B reels as I said and I have made the first scene fade out and into the interview. The lighting was good but you can hear the table squeaking.

when making the interview I  had to find a good spot in my house with good lighting. As my house is small, the only really good space for this was the dining room table. However, there was one problem. That was the fact that the table squeaked quite a lot. In editing I tried to get rid of this noise but I was unsuccessful. The interview I thought went well, there was a story being told through out and you understand what the interview is about.
